The concept of Instructional Design was a revelation to me. I had never seen myself as a designer. In my teaching I had always been a user of what someone else designed. I learned through this program that one of the best ways to learn is to teach something to someone else. I was priviledged to teach several courses with the New Media Program and for Summer Institutes. A syllabus for Learning with Online Projects can be viewed.
The most important thing when designing is to begin with goals. Clarifying the goals in a project guides in the design of it. My goal when I created a project for Foundations of Educational Technology was to take time to read the various opinions on the value of using technology in the classroom. I wanted to develop an informed understanding of the various points of view on this topic. The paper I wrote as a foundation for the project described these points of view and contained a detailed bibliography. I then worked on designing a digital artifact that could teach what I had learned to someone else. The boxing match became the paradigm that I chose to illustrate the concepts.
In the course of my studies I was lucky to have the opportunity to design several courses. Learning with Online Projects was based on my experience working with students and teachers doing Online Projects. I saw how worthwhile they were, but also how different they were than most teachers are used to teaching. I designed this course to be a chance for teachers to actually experience learning through doing an Online Project.
Another course that I designed for the Continuing Education Summer institute was called Technology Leadership in Schools. This course dealt with issues that teachers who were interested in the integration of technology in schools would encounter. It dealt with Technology and School Reform, Technology Planning, Grant Writing, Safety and Security, and other issues. I designed one module for each of the topics. This was a totally online course and students who took the course spent time reading, looking at web sites, discussing issues in a discussion forum and writing a Technology Plan.
The Russell School Technology Plan was completed for a course entitled Multimedia in School Libraries. The plan was adopted as the school's actual plan. It has been updated since this first draft, but it is being used.
An experience in designing a WebPage for a company was a great way to learn in a hands on way. Wayne Lammers "hired" a group of students from the Web Page Design class to create a web page for his small video and photography company. We spent many hours looking at other photography websites and planning and designing a site that would highlight what Wayne Lammers had to offer.
For the Research Course I designed a study proposal for a study. This document will require Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download it for free.
