SCENARIO ONE
You are a math teacher at Wilson High School, a beautiful older building with a student body of approximately 500 students. About 60% of the students are college-bound. Many of the other 40% are already working in family farms or local jobs that they will continue after high school. Recently there has been a large increase in the drop out rate.
You are one of the few teachers who has used a computer with your class. You started with an Apple IIe back in the eighties when they were new. That computer was donated to the school. Since then the active PTA has supported your requests for technology. They recognize the value of having a computer in the classroom and the good work you are doing with their kids.
Just this fall, the school has received a large federal grant for technology. At Wilson High, the administration does all of the grant writing, so you had no input into writing the grant. However, when the grant was awarded Dr. Burton, the principal, came to you asking for help. "I know that you have always used computers. I know nothing about computers and don't have time to learn. We have just received this $100,000 grant which needs to be used over two to three years. Would you be willing to take on the job of Technology Coordinator?" Then Dr. Burton added "Of course, you would be given one free period a day to take care of the extra responsibilities. Oh, yes ... the grant talks about teacher training. ... Would you be able to do some training, or find someone who can come in and do it?"
You feel like you must agree although you don't know what you are getting into. After thanking you and expressing his absolute trust in your abilities, Dr. Burton begins to leave and then stops and says, "The PTA said something about NETDAY. I think they want to network the school. I hope you can help them."
What will you do?
